Breathable, Windproof Rain Gear Recommendations?

I ordered that rain jacket yesterday. Should have it before the PPP and FriendSTOC - and HOPE to heck I won't need it. They guy said it packs down to about 5x5 - if it works out this will be something I have been looking for for a long time :popcorn

Reflective or nothing. You can't see those bright colors in the dark. What are you people thinking? All you see are the reflective strips on the jackets in the dark. Luckily, FT appears to make a reflective version.

Cool. Look forward to seeing it at FriendSTOC. I, too, have looked a long time for something truly waterproof, lightweight, that packs small. Breathable would be a plus.

I will be checking out your jacket as well. I have still been looking around locally and havent quite come up with anything yet. I did send all the liners back to Cycleport. I still have the Frog Toggs to use just in case. Since big time cold shouldnt be an issue on this trip the Toggs will probably see me through for now if I cant come up with something in the next week or so. I also sent the Air Mesh Kevlar pants back in exchange for the stretch Kevlar pants. They should be here tomorrow.

Can you give a report on the Cycleport liners your returning. Pros\cons.

I cant give a ride report on the liners because I never rode in them. I bought the Air Mesh Kevlar jacket and pants and liners and have only had them for about 3 weeks. The only riding I have done so far in them was from Dallas, TX to Birmingham, AL and back in the jacket and pants but there was no need for the liners. I will say this about the liners. They impressed me as being top quality. There are plenty of testimonials out there already that I read when I researched all this stuff and Im sure I would agree that they would work well.

My reason for returning them is as follows from the beginning of this thread: This is probably a tall order and there may not be anything out there that meets all the criteria but I thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone can offer up any recommendations. I would like to find some rain gear that can be worn over riding gear, is wind proof, breathable, and preferably has reflective piping, striping or other visibility enhancements. I just recently purchased some Cycleport gear and opted for the windproof/waterproof liners that go underneath the jacket and pants but I am rethinking that decision. I think I would prefer something that is windproof, waterproof and breathable to put on over the gear if rain is encountered as opposed to having to stop, take the gear off, put the liners on, then put the gear back on and then be on my way. I like the idea of stop, put the gear on over what I already have on and then be on the road again. The suit would also serve the dual purpose of being the windproof component in colder weather. Does anyone know of a product that meets those criteria?

As far as the Cycleport rain pants and jacket, to be honest, I have just flat overlooked them. Im surprised Christy at Cycleport didnt mention them to me as I had quite a bit of conversation with her explaining the rationale above why I wanted to return the liners. After having looked at the links I think those might be viable candidates. Thanks for the tip. I will check them out.
 
We use frogg toggs.They are waterproof,breathable,windproof and we got them on sale cheap.They seem like they're made of paper but stand up well to the m/c envioronment and pack small.Unfortunately ours have had lots of use.They are ugly also.:D

I just ordered the pants today in a custom size with a 36" inseam. I had looked for a long time for rain pants that I could get in a tall or custom inseam with out have 50" of waist. Seems everyone wants to sell XXXXL just to get a 34-35" inseam when I rain across their site with their custom sizes. I was in "ST Heaven". :D

I'll post my review when I get them. I only ordered the pants for now since most of my jackets have liners. I'll see how the pants are and then decide on the jacket later.
 
Just received my new motoport stretch kevlar street jeans. They look just like regular jeans and fit exactly like the jeans I sent to them. With the kevlar being a stretch material I'm wondering if I perhaps should have sent them a little bit tighter pair of jeans, as they do seem slightly roomy. Never had armored pants before. I think they will take a little getting used to. Hoping the armor does not make them too warm, Wayne at Motoport assured me that they would be more comfortable than regular jeans.

I have been wearing a "preowned, very good condition" Ultra 2 cordura jacket.
Have used both liners and have not seen a reason to zip/snap them to the jacket.
 
Breathable, Windproof Rain Gear Recommendations

I've also been looking for summer rain gear, and I generally think that the best would be a Gore-tex product, at least one size larger than what I would normally wear, and in a two-piece version. I would add that the outfit should not be insulated, should be designed for motorcycling, and should be a light color to shed the sun's heat. (Also, I've been told that Gore-tex jackets don't work well unless they have vents in the armpits that you can zip open.)

Motoport made, a few years ago, a Gore-tex rain jacket that looked good except that it lacked underarm vents, and cost a lot.

The kind that have a thin, perforated, plastic skin and a cotton-like liner are comfortable but far too rip-prone for me, and may leak at the seams and/or front zipper.

I've seen Chinese, rain-gear manufacturers brag that their fabric is "EVA".

Questions: What kind of fabric is used for a Frog Togg? And what is EVA?

In summary, try Motoport before Aerostich on this one, and expect to make a lot of friends if your search is successful.

Thanks for the tip about Motoport. I see two mesh jackets (Air Mesh Kevlar and Ultra II Air Mesh Kevlar) offered by them. Which do you have and/or recommend? Do you know of any photo available for the lighter colors they offer? And are their liners breathable?

Is the FirstGear Rainman breathable? How is it on a hot, muggy day? (The catalog description doesn't seem to say. Clair says it is adequate, but he's in Utah where it may not get really steamy.)

Is the Cycleport (or Motoport) Aero-tex rain jacket breathable? (It makes me sweat when they say it will "keep me warm".) How about the pants, Harold? What material are they made of? (They seem to indicate that they now use something that breathes better than Gore-tex.) And they still seem costly to me, with no underarm zipper vents in the jacket. But one Concours rider advised, "There is no worse investment you can make than to buy cheap raingear."

The pants were just shipped out yesterday and are suppose to arrive on the 20th. Will update when I get them in but they clam 100% Waterproof, Windproof and Breathable. Its a Breathable Rain Pant with no Polyurethan coating on the face fabric. The Polyurethane (plastic) coating degrades the breathability in the warmer temperatures.

Aero-Tex - A thin, light weight membrane, mounted between the face fabric and the lining. It is Waterproof, Windproof, and Breathable. Cycle port has been manufacturing garments with this membrane for over 20 years

Gee, I ride in the daytime in the rain, too. And those reflective stripes don't help at all in the daytime. A rainsuit should be BRIGHT and have reflective material, both.

Didn't get a chance to talk to you at FriendSTOC. What jacket was it you ordered, and did you get it before the PPP? If so, I know you had a chance to use it. What did you think?

True enough. It just seemed that folks were looking at bright only. Either way, I still need rain gear. Liners are good but the outside still gets soaked.
