Helmets New Shoei RF-1100

The Schuberth C3 is touted as the quietest helmet but its $715. I personally do not wear helmets that meet the snell standard as the shells are too hard. This is to pass the pierce test. This also will help to scramble your brain in a get off according to some. DOT or ECE is fine for me. I have a Schuberth C2 now and just don't know where to go when its time to replace it. I love the internal sun visor. I am looking at the Scorpion EX900.

I like the one piece full faced helmets for safety, but I use Nolan N102s since I sure like the convenience of the flip face. That said, I still may go to a reg. full face except I'm now addicted to the chin latch mechanism of the Nolan. I don't know if I could/would go back to D rings again.

The C3 is claimed to be the quietest modular (opening face) helmet. I can guarantee you the RF1000, and RF1100 are quieter.

The Scorpion is a noisy helmet by the way.

As far as Snell standards go, if the Moto GP riders prefer the Snell certified helmets, thats enough for me.

Is it a preference for the Snell certification or a requirement for racing in the US? I really don't know.

The new RF1100 meets the new 2010 Snell standards which are supposed to address those issues.

Yesterday I spoke with my favorite helmet guy at the MC dealer when I picked up my wheel with fresh tire.
I asked his opinion on the RF-1100 and he was full of praise.

He said it fit his head better than the previous (subjective and individual). Iput my size on and I have to say, it fit really nicely on my shape head (I have an RF-1000 now).
He said that the lever on the side does not just crack the visor UP for air, but FORWARD in its entirety: This causes air to flow from the bottom across the visor to the top, in stead of into the helmet.
The vents are slightly repositioned which might improve airflow, but I did not run around the store to test that thesis. :run1:

I really wish they would offer Shoeis standard with pinlock-ready visors. But I guess that would increase the helmet's cost for a feature only a small percentage of riders appreciate (too many sunny Saturday morning riders).

Does any really care about the sharp testing and that the xr 1000 only got 3 stars?

I'm such a nitpick: I love the fit, finish and quality of Shoei's. But, I'm so completely sold on the flip-down sun shield that I won't consider this helmet - and I think it looks great in every other regard.

When Shoei gives me a sun-shield, I'll be all over it.

Didya no that a 1.5" wide strip of el cheapo window tinting plastic across the top of your visor cuts a lot of glare, or when you double it up even blocks the sun very effectively?

Yeah, not the same as a flip down sun shield, but perhaps and maybe it is a better alternative than you think. ...Which allows you to be all over a helmet of great fit, finish and quality.

Agree about using the window-tint film instead of a visor. There are commercial versions but doing as this article suggests, http://www.webbikeworld.com/Reviewed-motorcycle-products/shade/, will get you what you need for very little money and it works great.

I use two layers of the stuff I found and it's just right. I put it on the outside because I have a Pinlock shield on the inside and it's lasted for more than a year with no problems at all. Once you get the shape and the position figured out the way you want them you can use water with a drop of dishwashing detergent added to wet the shield and push out any bubbles after you apply the plastic.

I just got an email the other day that wiki is selling a photochromic skin that is supposed to fit on the outside of shoei helmets, among others... The next best thing to a retractable sun shield if they work as advertised... Bad news, around $70... www.wikihelmets.com

Just got my RF-1100 blue firestrike helmet today. Just took a short ride and I like it so far! Just my :tc1:

The thought has crossed my mind.

But, it's the convenience of instant shield-on/shield-off configuration that I've come to appreciate.

That said, I still prefer Shoei Helmets....

I have also been wishing for a sun visor. I do not like the little strips you attach to the visor and don't care for tinted visors.

Shoei will not do the internal visor as they believe it affects safety. No Snell certified helmet has an internal drop down sun visor.

I love Shoei helmets, and think this might work.

I've even considered coming up with my own version.

Really on the fence for a new helmet. The contenders are an RF-1000, Nolan N43, or a Nolan N103. Yes three different styles... The later two I have not tried on and am looking for a dealer. My main concern is helmet height. I had a Arai Quantum on and it fit well on the head but my jaw extended below the chin bar.

i bought one, I get it in a week from now (approx) ... I'm 'retiring' my RF1000 to commuter / track day duties ... the 1000 has approx 120-150k on it so far and I think for touring I'll get something new ... I got it in the OP's axis yellow color, I plan on taking black refelective tape to it and making my own design...
