I was looking at an ad for an ST1300, but the seller could not tell me whether it had ABS. How can you tell?

Could have ABS lettering on the fairing.

Look for the pulser ring (and magnetic pickup) on the front and rear rims.

Pull plastics and look for the ABS guts. :)

ABS light on the dash.

ABS sensor on the right fork leg immediately below the brake caliper. As I was shopping for mine and, like you, I found the listing to be unclear, I'd look for that black wart in that location in photos to tell. The tone ring on the rear wheel is nearly impossible to discern from a full bike photo, though a closeup of the shaft-side (right) rear wheel might. Similarly the tone ring on the front blends into the brake disk wheel from a distance.

Depending on the year you are looking at.

2002 (Europe) 2003 USA- to 2007 the ABS front ring looked like this:

Europe & USA 2008 to 2017 (only ST1300P bikes were sold in the USA after 2012) The ABS rings were:

2002 to 2010 Without ABS. I don't think any were sold without ABS after 2010. (Maybe 2011 European models?) :

As STRider's picture shows, the black pick up is fairly obvious. If not in the pictures, describe it for the seller so he can go look/take a picture.

If a guy doesn't know if his bike has ABS, I think I would pass.

And what is the one thing to look for or concern with the ABS system on the ST.. corrosion of the... I can't remember the name of that little piston.

I think you're referring to the SMC - secondary master cylinder - on the left front caliper bracket.

Yes, it's condition is something to look for, but it's not an ABS specific component, rather it's part of the linked braking system. All ST1300 models have it.
