My ST becomes a project bike...

Last year I scratched accidently dashboard glass and had to purchase whole unit from ebay with intention to replace a glass. Also, I have on the shelf finished old project with arduino based cruise control unit. I hesitated to install it, because I didn't find appropriate place to mount magnets on the front or rear wheel for speed sensor.
And, looking at disassembled dashboard, I had an idea, why not to get rid of mechanical part of speedo and replace it with electronic one, and use speed pickup sensor for both devices, speedo and cruise control?

Need to mention, that mechanical speedo is not so reliable as other parts of ST (at least, in my case). I had speedo failed twice in 5 years of riding ST, both times while riding long distance trips.
So considering this, I decided to go with the new project. This is my almost final result in couples of pictures:

speedo sensor was disassembled, and instead of worm gears I placed inside a hall sensor:

then refabricated speedo unit, and installed stepper motor to drive mileage counter, and servo to drive needle. Main idea was leave visual appearance of the unit intact:

I also finished with mocking up the electronic part (of course, based on Arduino again) and programming:

Bench test was passed fine, next step - put controller into a small box, install speed pickup sensor, and go for a field test )

I remembered one more speedo failure - when I took off with a lock on the brake rotor. It smashed speedo cable, had to replace it one more time)
 
worried the blue machine was toast!

sorry for that. Hope this won't happen.. started to watch speeduino EFI videos on youtube, had to take some pills to stop thinking about it.

electronics usually is easiest part of these projects. But when you start to put things together, and start working with mechanical part - that's where headache come from.. Need to acquire 3D printer..

My only speedo failure was on my much newer AND lower mileage ST1300! Closest thing to that on my 1100 was being a little too exuberant tightening the oval retaining screw and cracked the plastic fitting at the wheel end of the cable. It's now safety wired to the speedometer gearbox. :)

However, the tach on my 1100 did fail a few years back. An ebay replacement addressed that problem. Internet speculation points to a failed capacitor on the electronics board (about as primitive as it can be and still call it 'electronics'). Someday I may repair that and get it back in circulation (read: list for sale here or on ebay).
 
Wishing of all the shyte that I actually know... some of it was actually USABLE for things like this.

it is almost done! installed it. Now we have ST1100 with electronic speedometer with integrated cruise control. Speedo works fine from first try, all calculations based on wheel dimension were correct (new speedo indicates just 2 km/h faster if compare to GPS). it looks I need to set + 5 km/h delta.

But I still didn't figure out how to mechanically link cruise control servo to carb throttle shaft. I have two steppers to choose from, big motor I suppose is overkill for this project, small one - i don't know. Need to measure max torque to turn throttle shaft. Thinking about 3d printing gearing linkage or using some clutch cable - there is no much room around carbs.

Might I suggest visiting the MC Cruise website and see if some of their system's components might be adapted to your project? If not the actual parts, their design could inspire/inform something you design and fabricate yourself.


Their cable interface unit, CIU, looks like it would fit the bill for you. The OEM pull cable and a cable from the servo (assuming you have that figured out) both interface to the CIU, then an additional single cable attaches to the carbs the same way the OEM cable does. This would be an additional short cable you'd have to make, which MC Cruise can also supply.


This company has sold a kit for the ST1100 in the past, but appears to be discontinued and not listed on their site. However, most of the hardware components, including a servo, are offered individually.

Take a look at the installation instructions for the ST1300, specifically pages 22 through 29 to see how the CIU is designed and installed on the bike.

Might I suggest visiting the MC
STRider, thank you for sharing links and installation manual. I will keep in mind the idea, how they add servo cable to standard cable linkage. I think CMU thingy from the manual is 3D printable. Maybe with this idea i don't need to remove carbs to install servo, that's promising)
 
I have toyed with some ideas to adding the cruise control cable to the bike's throttle cable.

One is to remove the throttle return cable from the hand grip, and run the CC cable there.

The other is to use an old-fashioned throttle-cable splitter to wye the two into the pulley.

...would not want to change stock cable routing.. I had an idea to install stepper motor directly to the throttle body and get rid of stock cables, but this is too much for me)
 
Hi! does anyone accidently have disassembled instrument cluster on the table? I stupidly forgot to take some dimensions during installation of my electronic speedo PCB.. Now I need to duplicate PCB with some tweaks but would be happy not to remove cluster two times.. At least I'm looking for dimensions in mm exactly at this place:1750060819392.png
