I don't wish to sensationalize anyone's moto crash, but my friend Don Redman has been documenting his recovery after his crash in June.

It IS hard to watch, but there is no actual blood and gore in this accident reconstruction, only his matter-of-fact recount of what led to his highside on the interstate.

He has three camera views, and a very detailed explanation. The focus is on proper riding gear.

Among other things, he was riding with his modular helmet flipped up (open), a fact he mentions in other videos during his recovery.

I can't decide if I want to watch it or not. Do I want to be horrified at 10AM before my daily ride?

For some reason I thought this was a newer one, because I had seen most of his videos through the recovery process, but not every single one.

However, I hope it will serve to remind everyone, as this is not your ordinary crash scenario.

Usually they're due to riding beyond one's skill level, or they involve other vehicles, or both.

It is a good video made by someone accepting the facts of the accident. I hope his recovery will continue…. What is especially good about the video is that there is non of that trying to shift blame or some of the usual crap you hear after an accident. Sad story with an outcome that is better than it could have been.

I have a couple of SW-Motech dry bags and they have an almost fool proof attachment method. Quite a few years ago I lost a sleeping bag off my bike with no bad consequences other than that I had to buy a new sleeping bag, this video shows that a minor incident can have devastating consequences.
 
I appreciate his video. As @Gerhard said, he didn't try to shift the blame or say he "laid it down", or any other such nonsense. I like to watch or read about other people's accidents. Not out of morbid curiosity, but simply just so I can learn from their mistake and not do the same thing.

One thing I learned from my own mishap this summer is you have no control once you start going down. It's not like you can plan to put your arms out in front to protect your face. Nope, you are like a rag doll totally at the mercy of forces far greater than you.

So trying to avoid the circumstances that led to his accident and wearing good gear are about all you can do.

I actually saw this video when it was first made 2 months ago- I watched a couple of others just now made by him after the one above. Gear is everything (not implying better gear would have resulted in a better outcome regarding him losing his leg) and it is a lesson learned to make sure all is tied down to the bike (and what happened could happen to any one of us, depending on the circumstances).
 
Definitely worth my time to watch. The worst part is . . . the first minute or so with scenes not related to his accident.

@Erdoc48 it wasn't in this video, but an earlier one, where Don definitely mentioned better footwear.

He left his "real" riding boots in his converted camper that he travels out of. He further admits the modular helmets are not to be worn open (raised) as he was doing when he crashed, even though his face was the least severe of his injuries.

In the end, we cannot know, but only speculate how / if his boots could have saved his foot.

Don is remarkably candid about all of it.

Having suffered some minor foot injury when my ST skidded out from under me at low speed, I don't think run of the mill motorcycle boots will prevent major damage. Sure, boots offer some protection, but the forces involved will overcome the leather. I was wearing BMW riding boots, but if you are moving forward (or sideways) and your boot grabs the pavement something has to give. I have no doubt that professional motocross boots will offer more protection than what I was wearing, but even with steel reinforcing there is a limit to the amoount of protection.

IIRC, Noraly injured her ankle and she was wearing boots that looked to be more robust than what I wear.
 
I would agree here…if the foot hits the ground and the lower leg twists around as it’s still moving, I doubt it matters what boots you’re wearing as the torsion forces won’t be stopped by the material of a boot, even if very strong. Something’s got to give and it will likely be the ankle or lower leg. What I suspect happened to Don is more substantial vascular as well as bony injury (and VERY substantial tendon/ ligament tearing), such that the repair would be so extensive that the surgeon likely decided an amputation with subsequent prosthetic would be the best option (I’m neither an orthopedist nor vascular surgeon) vs a very protracted rehab in the hope the ankle/ foot would actually work as prior to the injury and that wasn’t guaranteed.
 
Wow. I watched quite a few of the videos. Nasty accident. I've had some bad ones, but not that bad. He is extremely lucky he didn't get run over.

I am geared-up with the exception of wearing jeans. I have some old Sidi On Road Sympatex boots that have been through most of the accidents I've had. Great boots.

Of course, even the best gear is not going to help you when it's your time to go.

I think the cruiser guys who ride around like they're dressed for the beach need to watch these videos.

Did you notice the "guard rail"?

That would slice right through you if you hit it at any rate of speed. It'd be like using dental floss to cut birthday cake with at the office.

Those guardrails are hideous. I think getting run over would be more humane than getting parted out through one of those.
 
They remind me of those little devices in a kitchen drawer, that we use to slice boiled egghead.
Y'all know what I mean.
