Last week my family had scheduled our vacation at the beach. It's only about a 5.5 hour ride from the house and I was going to take the bike. After all, why not? The services have been done, it's running fine and the tires only have a few hundred miles on them. My son stopped me. "what if something goes wrong" he asked? I deferred and rode with everyone in the car. Saturday was fine. Sunday I was taken ill. (Very Ill) Call the EMTs ill and puking on the public street ill. I want from the ER to hospital bed to ICU. They thought I had a stroke. My blood pressure shot up, they saw brain aneurysms (non-bursted) on my CT scan and most disconcerting of all, my eyes went out of sync. I was also running a low grade fever. Less than 24 hours later all the symptoms were gone. I checked out of the hospital intending to go home but before that could be arranged it happened again. I have never been that sick to my stomach in my life. I will never eat sausage again!

To get home I took a 5.5 hour ambulance ride as a precaution. If I was having a stroke that would have killed me. I never had such a rough ride. I am at home recovering. I am weak, wobbly, on antibiotics, plus a bigger dose of BP meds and lots of rest.

Now I am left to reevaluate my whole life. About 7 years ago my buddy Dave and I were riding back from the Texas Hill Country. We pulled off at a convenience store were I had "a spell" I felt dizzy and sick but I put it down to dehydration, pounded down a quart of water and was fine. Thinking back on it it may not have been dehydration.

I have seen my Doctor here. I have given over the CT scan and the MRI scan to her. The main brain aneurysm they saw runs through the artery at the base of the skull and is inoperable. Dr thinks it might be an inner ear balance issue. I may never feel confidant enough to go tripping again.

Better times.

Sounds a little like BPPV spell i had a few years ago.

That sounds right. My dizziness is down to 10% but it's still there. I have been doing nothing on orders from my wife. I am getting better but it is slow. Thanks for this information.

So as a post script to this event, we were having a big fish dinner on Sunday night before this started. I was looking over the menu and the crab stuffed shrimp sounded really good but I declined. It seems that whenever anyone gets sick on vacation they blame the crab stuffing and I wanted to be sure I didn't go there.

You get a chance to think at 2:00AM in a hospital bed. I remembered that, possibly in 5th grade, my mates and I were enamored with the karate moving in the pictures. We wondered if the classic karate chop worked and so we practiced hitting each other at the proper angle. We learned that it indeed does work and can really ring your bell. It's funny to think about now but this is the exact place where they found the aneurysm that passes through the brain stem. Stroke runs in my mother side of the family and I have been carrying these little time bombs with me probably all my life but the actions of a 12 year old boy really didn't help things.

What an ordeal. Hope they get whatever ails you figured out, figure out how to fix it, and you are able to confidently back on 2 wheels again.

I expected a tale of horrible traffic, vehicular breakdowns, endless yammering of the mother-in-law, etc. So sorry to hear about the actual problem; hope you recover fully and soon.

It could have been so much worse. I remember riding back from South Texas with my buddy Dave. It was hot and we pulled into a convenience store and I felt dizzy and sick. I chugged down a big bottle of water and I felt batter. I might and been dehydrated or I might have been on the verge of an ambulance ride. That would have sucked.
