AZ 2005 build - Are you ready for another one?

Okay, I've decided to start removing the engine from the 2006 ST1300P and move it to the 2005 ST1300 AZ bike.

The reason I'm building the '05 is because I think it will be easier to register, after I rebuild it. The 2005 has a bad engine, I bought over a year ago, from a guy, Larry (IGOFAR), knew in Tucson.

I have since removed the plastic and put it on my 2010, that I sold to one of my sons (in CA).



I still have my 2012 Black plastic that I'll probably put on the 05, once I get it running.

The first task will be to remove the engine from the 2006, clean it up and then replace the waterpump, clutch, clutch slave, any gaskets/o-rings I can get to and prep it for the 05.

So today, will be the start, ripping off all the plastic.

I'll add pictures as I go, like I did for my 2004 rebuild. And I hope it doesn't take me that long!

Day 2:

Removed the front cowl, lower cowls, instrument panel & the front stay.

Made a little progress today.

I decided I need to run it to the side of the house to take a pressurewasher to it, which means it needs to run, so i had to reinstall the upper stay so I could mount the tipover switch to it.


I removed the rear rack & cowl.



And this is what the engine looks like...



I'll probably use the front cover from the 05, this one looks pretty messed up.

Okay, I cleaned the bike up a bit. At least the engine doesn't look as bad.

And I did more tear down, drained the oil, coils, front brake calipers, the lines will be off tomorrow.







As I was removing the brake calipers, I found a few bolts stripped!

Thanks, but if this engine proves to be bad, I'll have a lot of parts to sell!

Even if it's good, I'll still have some parts to sell, just not as many!

I removed the rear frame, fender and the lower gas tank. The tank insides are good, along with the fuel pump. I'm glad of that, since I figured with it sitting for years like it did, that the tank & fuel pump would be full of rust, like I found the 2004, after sitting for a long time.

More teardown this afternoon.

Take a look at the crash bar mount, see anything out of place?



On the otherside of the frame, the bolt had been stripped and they used threadlock on it!

And as I was removing stuff, I found a number of bolts that were not tight! I could unthread them with my hands!

And BTW, with all the ST1300s I have owned and put miles on, I've never tore down one this far. This is all new to me!

The engine is loose, it's just getting the frame off of it. I'll probably remove the front wheel & forks, and use my tractor to lift the frame up over the engine.

I have had a lot of fun, trying to remove the engine. I found I had to raise the front of the engine and slide it forward to get the rear of the engine, clear of the frame. An engine hoist would be handy right now. I'll get the tractor, after lunch.









I'll post more after I remove the frame.

Getting that frame off wasn't too bad. At least I didn't dump over the engine!





And all that's left:



I did put the tires & shock back on the frame, so I can move it around as needed, until I can get rid of the frame.

With all of that, I'm exhausted!

If you're not selling the frame, take it to the local scrap yard. There's a few $$ there in aluminum. Just make sure there's no steel in it anywhere or you'll get the much lower smelter price.

I've made more progress today.

I first had to lift the engine (with my tractor) into a bin I have for dumping coolant in, so as I clean it, I don't have the dirty cleaner all over the garage.



I also had to remove all the electrical wires and the plumbing, along with cleaning the front and valley. I'm still working on the valley.



Also, look how dirty the back of the engine looked.



And this what I have so far. Still a little more cleaning needed.



Tomorrow, I need to run out and get more cleaner and some gasket remover, so I can start on the front of the engine, removing that gasket material.

Also I think I need to move the 2005 out of the one shed and into my tractor shed, where it will be easier to get to if we start getting some wet weather.
