No worries, this is not a post asking for a solution. I know there are a slew of ideas out there, some plausible, many dubious. That aside, I really want to be able to use this pocket but it just gets too hot. After a long ride today I decided to stick a thermometer in the pocket for a minute. It finally topped out at just over 135 degrees. What I’m wondering, before I delve into fixes for this, is this a normal temp?

I thought this was for the Hot Pocket sandwiches and a added feature from Honda.
I pickup a frozen sandwich in the morning and put it in the right pocket and by lunch time it's ready to eat.

Seeing as the riding temperature of the ST engine is roughly 200°F and heat needing to dissipate around it, I would presume that it would be quite normal to get 135°F for a component so close to the engine.

While I never measured the temp, that sounds about right...

Insulation only delays the thermal transfer, does not eliminate it.
Your sandwich will just take a little longer to cook. Give it enough time, and the temp will rise to the same level.
You'd need to have some air scooping in for cooling to make a difference.
It is also possible that actual temp while riding could be slightly lower, with some air flow around the pocket. You'd have to measure it.
I picked up quarters from the pocket to pay toll once, had gloves on but the attendant didn't and she had some choice words for me.
Can we come up with a cook book for the pocket, "The Pocket Cook Book". Then all we need to do is insulate the top to keep heat in. Bet a set of short ribs would fit just right. plug the drain and fill with sauce, let simmer through 400 mile day!

I had some exhaust guard left over from a kit that I wrapped the compartment with. Before it would be scorching, now not so but still gets warm
I got the hint on that one! One of my offerings at my tech event!

I figure it's going to come down to cutting some airflow into the thing.

The kind that protects the plastic close to exhaust, about an 1/8 in thick.
Wrapping something with insulation doesn't do anything if there is no airflow on the cool side to rid it the heat that soaks through.
Insulation only slows the transfer of heat, it doesn't stop it. Until maybe you get into the more exotic stuff.

My thoughts too. I'm working on a way to add airflow through the pocket. Starting with a vent in the inner cowl, into a vent in the front of the pocket, and flowing out to a vent in the rear. Will post updates as I have them. Airflow really seems the only plausible way to fix the issue.

I once made the mistake of throwing a couple if Milky Way bars into the right pocket (which seemed cooler that the left. I won't make that mistake again. I did put them in a sandwich bag.
Putting them in the 'fridge when I got home allowed me to carefully peel the wrapper off and enjoy.

Yeah, I measured the temp in the right pocket...it only got up to 120 degrees
