Loose mirror covers?

I am having issues with the plastic mirror covers loosening (through worn grommets, I believe). I fear that I may hit a bump or pothole and eject one (or both).

I am unable to find numbers for the grommets that are in the cowl....any help here?

I have entertained the idea of a small stainless steel strap top and bottom on both.

What are others doing to retain these covers?

Same issue here. I guess both top plasticky have to be replaced. Luckily my bike is black so I taped them with black gorilla duct tape until plastics show up on eBay.

Your mirror covers should have come with a tether to the bike to prevent loss if they did fall off. It is a small flexible plastic strip that screws to the mirror cover and then gets pinched behind the mirror mount. I know this doesn't solve your original issue but if you had the tethers at least you couldn't lose the covers.
 
Yes Don, but once I had to pull over on highway cause cover was hanging from bike. Thankfully I didn't loose it (they're expensive!).
my daughter told me that with the duct tape my bike looks "bad ***". Lol

If the metal studs in the mirror cover aren't loose, look at the recessed area that they go into. There should be 4 metal fingers in each recess & they sometimes get bent out of their original position. They should be almost touching each other....forming a cup for the metal stud to snap into. If the fingers are bent, you can carefully bend them back into position. If the are broken, you can buy replacements. I'm not certain, but I think this is the part # 90312-MT3-000 & HDLparts.com has them for $2.88/each. Good luck.

are you sure that's it? There's no pic or diagram? I have 8 ( need 6) in basket and about to buy them.

Found it on Hondabike.com $2.51 a pop, so ordered some other things I needed as well.

Hope you can change the order....because I think this is the correct part # 88115-MT3-000. I find it very difficult to distinguish the parts from the diagram. I found this part number by looking on the "windscreen" parts fiche. I would suggest that you talk to a real person (my preference) before placing the order. Sorry if I mislead you.

BTW, this part # is the same for all models....6 required (3/side).

Thanks a bunch...I just ordered 6, although I think I only need 2 or 3.....spares will allow me to try to rebend the originals!

Honestly, I've always thought that these clips are integral part of cowl riveted in. You're right that 9012-MT3-00 are screw clips that are on many other places around cowl.
But 88115-mt3-00 looks like correct part although they show only one piece on diagram.

You're right, it's 88115-mt3-00. Well there's no one to talk to at the parts stores now anyway. But those 5mm clips 9012-mt3-000 come loose too and could come handy to have in the bin.

Mine are for the ST1300, but I think they should fit the ST1100
On my upper cowl fiche. It also looks like the finger inserts are 88115-MT3-000
I would also buy the 4 clips that go over these finger grips.
Here is the part number for the 4 clips required.
020 CLIP, TUBE (B10) 95002-02100 004 $0.72
I only have 2 of the 4 clips on my mirrors and they are a bit loose.
Thinking of buying 6 clips along with 6 washers (item 7 on my fiche)as Honda calls those them finger grips.

I was able to "tighten" mine with a pair of needle nose pliers. Just bent them towards the center of the "flower" to make a smaller opening for the studs on the mirror. Worked great.
 
You can use a zip tie for the tether as well. One of my mirrors use a largish zip tie that simply slips through a slot on the mirror side and is screwed to the cover. Simple.
 
The wires don't work as a tether they snap or unhook easily. I lost 2 of this covers on 2 bikes. We have rough road in my neck of the woods and several times i had them pop out of their seating. In my opinion the plastic strip is not good enough tether, as its meant for slow speed pop out, say you brushed a car in traffic it pops out instead of braking.
If you hit a bad pot hole at 80m/h, the tether may not hold the cover and if it does the wind will make it bounce several times hitting your bikes fairing and scaring your paintwork before coming to a complete stop. our roads are so bad that i lost them twice at night. I have to order the plastic and turn signal assembly, the flowery gourmet seating as well.

As John stated, carefully bent those metal tabs back in abit evenly all around. That'll make them tight enough that you'll have to pop that cover right smartly to seat the plastic tabs. May take a couple times getting them bent so housing actually takes a fairly hard palm hit to engage those metal tabs tightly and be seated properly. No need for new mounts unless metal spring clips are broke.;)

Yes. For a while. Possibly. But it's not good for the wires or connectors. Maybe not too bad if a cover falls off but if it's knocked off for some reason the "electrical" tether could break. A more expense repair.

The tethers on my bike weren't connected in setup so I did it. One of my clips was slightly bent but needle-nose pliers fixed it. The spring clip was still in good shape.
