Helmets Skully's head-turning new motorcycle helmet

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

That $3000 price hasn't been confirmed yet (just a guess so far), and we won't really know until Skully puts the helmet up for sale.

It hasn't been confirmed but I think it's more than guess. I think somebody mentioned that figure being stated on a TV news program.

Regardless of what it will be the price of early adoption of new tech is almost always very steep. For electronics to last a five-year cycle I wouldn't expect it to drop anytime soon. Now if they could be transferred to a new Skully the buy-in could be a little less painful.

I've sent a note to Marcus asking just that - are the non 'life cycle' components transferable, or have they formulated a plan to make that life cycle transition for repeat buyers more affordable. Even at just north of $1K, if they can do it for that, it's a big nut when companies like LS2 are putting out $150 modulars that have better impact testing ratings than $500+ premium models from Shark and Shueberth. I'll let you know if I get any response.

I got a reply that I am on the list... FCFS..Perhaps!

Did you get this one, or the one that says you've been selected?

Welcome ,

We sincerely appreciate your support and dedication to making the roads safer for riders everywhere. By applying to beta test the AR-1, you have taken the first step toward revolutionizing an industry.

We are constantly reviewing beta applications, and will notify selected riders on a rolling basis beginning in February. Riders can increase their visibility in the selection process by sharing Skully onFacebook and Twitter. For your reference, we have updated the FAQ on our website to address the most commonly asked questions surrounding the AR-1. The FAQ can be found here. Anyone hear any more about this? Just wondering if anyone here was selected.

Not me, but then I'm not schilling for them either.

I haven't heard anything from them, or anyone who tossed their name in the sack for the testing - the beta testing bit is probably just a marketing scam.

Re: New super smart Helmet

Although I'm actually from Canada, for the purpose of this product, "I'm From Missouri".

Conceptually, it sounds like a great idea, but right now, all the company has is a concept (and a slick website to promote the concept). It looks to me like they are trying to source funds to get started from potential purchasers of the helmet.

I hate to sound like a pessimist, but if this idea really was workable, without any major drawbacks, I think that the major helmet manufacturers would have gone down that road already.

But, Bill, thanks for drawing the product to our attention.

I think they wouldn't want to try to sell a $1500 helmet to street riders let alone do the R&D to bring something like this to market. You let somebody else do all the leg work and if it's got legs buy out the developer.

Like any most any new product you want to see one in person before you buy especially at this price. I and others no doubt have been getting emails regularly stating it's not to late to order. At a discount I presume. It's an interesting concept. But it always comes down to the execution and how proud they are.

If it takes off there will probably be some competition and an increase in scale may drop the price. But it's no more than wait and see for me.

I decided to be an early adopter. I went ahead with the option to pay $500 now and $950 at delivery. They claim an estimated ship date for July 2015. We shall see.

Latest news is that I'll see the Skully in May 2016, but the ship date is not firm. I'm patient. I can wait.

In the meantime, I'm building two devices that I'll be using in conjunction with my helmet. One device is a home brew gear position indicator, and the other is a lean angle sensor. My device sends this data over BTLE to my iPhone. I won't be looking at that. The iPhone will eventually interface with the Skully helmet, through their 3rd party programming interface. I'll be able to display my current gear and lean angle on the heads up display. The phone has the GPS and data storage, so I'll be able to store GPS coordinate with lean angle and overlay that on a map for later viewing, for fun.

Yes, I am excited about playing with it. I have some more work to do with the iPhone application side of things, but I have the basic pieces of infrastructure all functioning as it should.

Seriously I look forward to following your progress.
