Article [13] ST1300 - U-joint Remove/Replace

Are all the miles on the bike yours? The first two of mine wore out right at 125,000 and again 125,000 miles late at 250,000 miles. So by my experience they last about 124,000 miles!
Raymond, I don't remember the specifics but how did they fail? On a trip or you noticed something while near home?

Both of mine gave me lots of notice with vibrations felt through the foot pegs. I felt it rough for over a thousand miles. It got to the point that while on decell the vibration was strongest. The first one I could feel the roughness with the rear tire off the ground. The second I was unsure of the problem until I replaced the Ujoint and the vibrations went away.

Ujoint 3 (installed at 252,100 miles) went rough at 332,500 so it was only good for 82,500 but I think it was a used part when installed. I didn't log it if it was new or used.

Ujoint 4 went in at 396,158 (63,658 mine 126,000 used item per ebay 189,658 total but ebay may be over claimed as it "bike miles") and it was indeed an ebay used ujoint with a claimed 126,000 already on it. (Emergency need it in 5 days repair to attend an STOC event.)

I know I'm crazy to install a used Ujoint but when I get them for under $20 to the house and they seem like they will last a few thousand I use them. I kind of enjoy the wrenching work anyway you know. The last time I priced a new Ujoint they were near $200. No idea right now on new price.

I got the bike at 76,000 but the u-joint was original
I am a very conservative rider because I live on the road and want the bike to run well and trouble free. I road it from Washington to California with it clunking around alot but made it, and then replaced it.
I had an ST1100 with 160,000 before this and had never replaced the U-joint.
