I am finally getting the belt replacement done on the '96. Does anyone have a list of parts that should be replaced while in there, including water pump, tensioner, pulleys, springs, gaskets, etc?

Or perhaps point me to a thread where this has been done. Part numbers would be a great help. Thank you.

Also, do you know of a reliable but inexpensive source for a belt? I have bought two in the past, both arrived in opened boxes, and I can not tell if they really are new.

I posted pics before: https://www.st-owners.com/forums/th...ether-this-timing-belt-is-new-or-used.186705/

That's great, UP, thank you.

Now how do I know which parts to order?

Does the water pump get rebuilt or replaced?

Is there a good belt thread?

Larry, there was a thread not long ago in which guys discussed the difficulty of finding a new timing belt for 1100's. IIRC, Gates no longer makes one. You might search for that thread or just try several different search engines to look for that part.

The belt I can figure out.

I'm torn between the replace-everything-while-you're-in-there and the if-everything-rotates-smoothly-leave-it-alone mentalities.

If you are going that deep, I would replace the belt, the water pump, and the pulleys at least.
I had water pumps fail at 130,000+ miles and 140,000+ miles so I am firmly in the camp of doing the water pump when I do the timing belt.
There was a gentleman who rebuilt ST1100 water pumps on this site but you'll have to search for him.
Kiltman rebuilt his own IIRC (look for that thread).
WebBike Japan may still have some new belts and new water pumps but you'd better have a large wallet ... ;)

How many miles on your ST? Sourcing parts such as a water pump may be difficult (I just looked on Partzilla for both the 94 and 2000 model years- my bikes- water pumps for both are unavailable).

I bought the rebuild it from HappyBikes in the UK. They no longer seem to be in business. My water pumps are still in fine condition, I did not replace or rebuild.
I posted in another thread the parts numbers for the seals and bearings and they are available from other sources like tractor supply places.
Happy Bikes do have a YouTube video on how to replace the bearings. That video is still available.

I know you did not ask me but my philosophy tends to be the same as @Uncle Phil's. It makes no sense (to me) to be penny wise and pound foolish and have to tear things apart a second time because I skimped on some cheap part. Yes, it makes a difference if we are talking about a $500 or $600 assembly but we are not talking about that here. All parts have a finite life. Twenty nine years and 100,000 miles is not an unreasonable life for everything that can be replaced while you are doing the belt.

Okay, what about a water-pump rebuild kit? Is that a Honda item?
Nope .
Check out Kiltman's thread on what parts numbers you need to do the rebuild yourself - but you may need a press to do it.
Webbike Japan (it appears they may have one but I doubt it) -

I believe this is guy that rebuilds them and the kit he sells for DIY -

or if you want one of his 'rebuilds' for a 96+ -

Thank you all, and I'm asking everyone. I am going to my mechanic's place tomorrow to make a shopping list together, and I will open this thread and the linked threads and sites.

I bought the water pump rebuild kit off ebay that st1100y listed a couple of post back. The kit worked great and I did need to use a press to do the task. The hammer and punch didn't work for me so I went to a friends house and used his press.

This appears to be the same outfit that Kiltman mentioned aka HappyBikes in the UK.
