I've switched over to R clips on the axle nut of the V1K. Don't have to wrestle the pin to get it straight enough to come off.
That Dupont STuff is great stuff. That is all I use and I apply it after every ride while the chain is warm. With a center stand it take about 2 min of my time. I use WD-40 to wipe the chain down with a rag (Not to soak it ) when I do a tire change or an oil change. But then I very rarely ride in the rain or dirt anymore.Until I get more experience and also since the maintenance schedule calls for it I cleaned the chain today for the first time. 459 miles on the bike. The service schedule says every 400 miles on average. Actually the service schedule in the OM doesn't give a miles interval but the early model year service manual I have does say every 400 miles... more or less.
I decided I wouldn't wait any longer and this is my first experience with a chain final drive on a bike... that I bothered to maintain. I did have a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 way back 25 years ago but didn't bother with chain maintenance on that one. My first bike was also chain drive but I really didn't ride it all that much and also only fixed what broke on it. Didn't know as much as I do now and only fixed what broke back then.
I used DuPont Chain-Saver since several riders I know and ride with recommended that. I lifted the rear wheel with my paddock stand to lube the chain. Worked really well and made it easy doing that.
