What would you replace the ST1300 with?

@ CrusingDog ...A lot of guys on the NC forum run knobbier tires on their bikes off off road use

I have Dunlop Mutants on my NC750X. Mutants are a street tire but they work well on unpaved roads too. I am no dirt rider so for me to say anything works off the pavement is a big deal. NC750X is a true do it all bike.

Agreed! A little heavier more power and checked everything I wanted on my ST1300. Loving it and so does the better half. 0DA89162-9266-4626-B9B0-FB7EAC0619F1.jpeg
Just been looking at a 2022 K1600 GTL. Amazing machine fully loaded. Soooo tempted to buy it. Help!!!! You don't fight temptation looking at the cookie jar.

I have a buddy with a K1600. He has had issues with reverse (fixed under warranty)... and on a recent trip had a fork start leaking. It was out of warranty by that time and that cost him about $4 grand to get fixed (not sure if he got a rear shock as well) His has that fancy adjust on the fly suspension

Hello folks! Having same dilemma either. My Pan European 1300 works fine, however something itches me to think about replacement with no reason. Morally outdated - most close reasoning, I guess.

I would and think I did end up replacing my ST1300 with a new Goldwing.

I'm really surprised that this bike hasn't been referenced more as a replacement for the ST1300 other than a couple casual mentions and one that actually did buy a new GW. Lots of reasons given as to why to REPLACE the ST with something else. Getting older, need less weight, etc. I want to focus on a REPLACEMENT FOR THE BIKE as if there are no more ST's available- none.

Now let me explain my opening statement. I 'would' for reasons I outline below. I 'think I did' because I bought a 2021 Goldwing DCT Tour for the reasons below and don't ride the ST much anymore.

The ST is a fantastic bike. Rock-solid Honda reliability, powerful yet silky-smooth engine, shaft drive, handles great, looks good, comfortable for LD touring, yet sporty enough for the twisties when you get there. And all at about 40 mpg. But let's face it. The ST is a compromise machine, a sport-tourer. There are better sport bikes and better touring bikes out there. Looking at the sport side, the ST has plenty of power and handles well in and out of the curves. Looking at the touring side, it is comfortable, has very good weather protection with its moveable windscreen, and a large fuel tank.

Now look at the new Goldwing. Rock-solid Honda reliability, powerful engine, shaft drive, handles great (yes it does), looks good, comfortable (the seat is the only seat on a bike that I have NOT replaced), very good weather protection with its moveable windscreen and the better fuel mileage than the ST (about 50 mpg even with two more cylinders) offsets the smaller fuel tank. Sounds like all the above boxes are checked. Diving deeper, most of us have added to the ST things that are already integrated on the Wing. Cruise-control, comfortable seat- for me, at least, top-box, fog lights, comms system, audio system, tpms, adjustable suspension, etc. I still added a nav system to the Wing as Honda's Nav System sucks. That sounds like an upgraded version of the ST.

The new Wing is lighter and smaller than previous recent versions. Its size is now on par with the ST but its COG is much lower than the ST. I probably shouldn't say it but I'm going to anyhow. I have NEVER even come close to dropping my Wing. Don't get me wrong. I will eventually drop it - I have no misconceptions there. With the change in the degree of rake and the shorter wheel base because of the wishbone front suspension, the Wing handles extremely well compared to older Wings. I didn't have any problems hanging with the ST riders last year at SnakeSTOC. Don't even get me going on the DCT. It is phenomenal! But that is the subject of another thread.

Of course, as always, YMMV!

Totally same here. I've considered liquid-headed BMW R1200RT and refused to proceed there, mostly because of vibrations and BMW philosophy. FJR is too sporty IMO. Adventure bikes, such as VFR1200X (which is juicy) - compromise: less comfort and questionable "all terrain" ability which is can not be practically achieved with wife as 2 up. I would prefer to made offroad by foot.

GW since 2018 (or ST1800 - spot on nickname) became sweet pot to have. The only item you not covered is an upkeep - is it making tyres worn with same to ST1300 pace?
Considering reliability is 99,99% - you buying only fuel and other consumables.

I replaced my 2003 ST1300 with four different bikes. The main Replacement is My 2014 FJR, Also I now have a 2019 Versys 1000SE that will replace the FJR some day as I get older., And when I get real old I have a 2013 V-Strom that will some day replace the Versys 1000 SE and the FJR. And later when I am really really old I have a little X300 Versys to fall back on after all the others are too heavy. After that it is probably a walker. :D The only variable is the time between replacements. In all seriousness it all depends on what you want. Less weight, more features, less maint., better fit for your situation, etc. It is all a personal choice and there is not one correct or incorrect answer. Good luck one what ever you choose.

Recently rode a FJR1300.... seeing if I wanted one or not... I was struck by how disconnected the bike felt... soft suspension, delayed reponse throttle...
Strangely, I recently inherited my dads Buick LeSabre....... The bike reminded me of that.... I'm sure it would be fine for a long tour.. But I'm at meh...
Others may disagree....

I got to find a ride on the Suzuki GX1000R GT.....

Lap of America is stilll TBD...

There's noting wrong with a Buick.

Too much bike. Show stopper for me, cannot remove bags or top box
Actually the 2018+ Goldwings don't feel that much bigger. I got to ride one for about 600 miles. It's still pretty agile, relatively, and has plenty of power. Definitely better for 2up riding, especially for the pillion. I wasn't much of a fan of the handlebars, but i think risers would make a big difference for me. I was thinking of getting one for 2up riding, then my wife decided to get her license and her own bike, so it's off the table for now.

True that you can't remove the saddlebags, but I think that most people rarely do. I use liners for when I get to the hotel, so the only time I remove them is for maintenance.

Although the top box can't be removed from the factory, there is a bagger version that some have mounted aftermarket top boxes.

Also, Max McAlister over at Traxxion Dynamics sells a kit that will let you "easilly" remove/install the trunk (15 min):

Hello!
<s>Why you saying GL1800+ (aka ST1800) cant be removed? - </s>

Check this used bike sale listing: https://auto.ru/motorcycle/used/sale/honda/gl_1800/1125413963-d693021b/ - author saying it is 'tour' version with removed topcase. I've attached pic in case something wrong with access.

If you have refs to ST1800 bagger with custom topcase, which looks nice - I would love to see.

UPD.
I see in attached video guy with removed topcase.

What i meant was that you couldn't purchase the Tour version without the trunk, only the Bagger. There are some differences between the two. As I understand it, its a difficult process to remove the trunk. Not something you do on a whim (unless you install Traxxion Dynamic's adapter). And if you remove it, you still have to purchase the rear fairing to cover up the open space. The trunk was never designed to be removed.

I just came across a couple of youtube videos.

Here's one on the installation:

And here's one on the overall look:

Keep in mind that the Shad 58X/59X is expandible so the look will be a bit different depending on the configjtation. I like mine and think it looks good either way :D :

I love my ST13, but as we all do, was looking at others and found a 2013 FJR fully equipped with all the goodie possible on it and for a reasonable price. Went to take a closer look. Well, the bike is top/front heavy. It doesn't seem to be taller than the ST, but I wasn't as comfortable holding it still (I'm 5"7) as the seat could be a bit wider. Duno. But the weirdest thing is it was fighting me in turns. Doesn't want to turn. And it is not the first FJR which I was riding who did this...
Also was looking at the RT - good but the ST does not vibrate and not pulling to the right while getting off the red light (character? maybe). K1600 is nice and fast, yet big as the Wing and not that it is $25k better than my ST.
Not really after the ADV/SUV tall bikes, and I do like the comfort and the practicality of a tourer. So there ST is my bike.

There is some vibs but that is the character of the boxer, some can live with it and some can't.. I'm fine with it myself.

I've never felt it pull to the right when taking off... not sure which RT you rode but the 1250 on the RT and GSA do not do that for me.

Not sure if it was a 1200 or an early 1250. But I guess I'd get used to this character. Still not me. Duno, I think the ST fits me more.

Yup, unless something just blows you away, it won't be a good move.
