Zumo XT Wiring on NX500 – Power Down Behavior

I added a 1K Ohm, 0.5W resistor to the circuit to see if it would speed up the voltage drop at the Zumo XT mount when I turn the bike’s key off. I connected one side of the resistor to Pin 87—the output side of the relay going to the Zumo XT power input—and the other side to the wire from Pin 85 going to the ground at the battery’s negative terminal. The goal was to discharge the voltage faster (within a few seconds) so the Zumo XT would shut down completely instead of lingering in power-saving mode.

Testing the voltage at the Zumo XT mount, I found that the resistor made no difference. The voltage still dropped slowly, just like before. Looking at the instructions again as I write this, I see it says: “Connect the other side of the resistor to ground—either Pin 85 ground or the motorcycle chassis ground.” I had connected it to the wire between Pin 85 and the battery’s negative terminal. Maybe I should have connected it directly to the battery’s negative terminal instead.

Anyway, it didn’t make a difference. I went for a ride today and made several stops. Each time I turned the key off, the screen displayed: “External power has been lost. The device will turn off.” That message stayed on the screen with the spinning circle for exactly one minute, then went into power-saving mode. When I restarted the bike, the screen came back on quickly, along with the instruments.

Maybe I'm losing it in my old age :)! When I first wired this up on my NX500, I expected the Zumo to shut down completely when I turned the key off, requiring a cold boot when starting the bike again. Perhaps I'm misremembering how it worked on my ST.

This setup is fine for me as long as everything works. I’ll run it like this for a few weeks and see what happens with the Zumo’s internal battery—whether it stays charged or drains if I don’t ride for a week or so. Even if it does, it should recharge when I start the bike and go riding.

Here’s a video showing the slow voltage drop on my bike:

And here’s another showing the shutdown screen when I turn the bike off:

I’m thinking it’s a feature not a bug, mine says, and I’m paraphrasing here, “hey you lost external power, did you mean to? Take corrective action “. If I take no action in 20 secs or so, it shuts off saving data before shutdown.

Is there a downside to this happening on your bike?

I think I’ve finally realized there’s no real downside here. If the Zumo goes into power-saving mode when I turn off the bike, it’ll come back on quickly when I restart. If I don’t ride for a while and the Zumo’s internal battery runs down, that’s when I’ll see a cold boot at startup. But once I’m riding again, the Zumo will recharge its battery as usual.
