Helmets Skully's head-turning new motorcycle helmet

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

You're right. I should have said $1500ish too. That leaves a reasonable budget for tech on top of the cost of the helmet itself. So I'd still be serious about one at $1500.

New tech is usually expensive and doesn't sell a lot at first. As it gets established refined and less expensive it sells more. Like the Tesla and other tech I wouldn't expect it to sell a lot out of the gate.

It has to start somewhere. It has to prove itself. There will be the usual "It's an answer looking for a problem blah blah. If it become reliable and viable it will sell. When it gets cheaper it will sell more.

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

The Skully got a short bit on the NBC Nightly News on Tuesday. $3,000 was the price estimate mentioned. Looks like it could take some getting used to. The image in the small rear view screen is REceeding while the image through the face shield is PROceeding. Kinda confusing to my ageing brain. And why is this better than a couple of mirrors like I have now?

For 3000... I'm not really sure that it'll be worth it anymore. I rather drop 1000$ on my dream helmet.. I'm sure there'll be another better standalone option available within the next 5 years.

BTW has anybody who signed up to be a beta tester heard from Skully? Or are you under NDA? LOL!

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

I like that nuviz HUD! A little bulky but being able to transfer it to other helmets is a big plus. I wish I had seen the campaign earlier!

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

The Nuviz looks really good, too. Though it is missing the back facing camera. The back facing camera is an essential element of the Skully that makes it look compelling to me.

One feature of the Skully that concerns me is that it uses a built in GPS. My concern is that the GPS will leave a lot to be desired compared with GPS units from Garmin. I do like the integration from a user interface perspective. But I think there is so much complexity in the making of a good GPS device that it will be hard for a shop that doesn't really have expertise (or at least a track record) of delivering quality GPS units, to deliver a high quality unit out of the gate.

Anyway, those are just my concerns. It will be really interesting to see how this all unfolds.

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

Got an email from Skully today, and here's a portion if it:
"Skully would like to thank you for applying to beta test the Skully AR-1, the world's first augmented reality motorcycle helmet. We sincerely appreciate your support and dedication to making the roads safer for riders everywhere. By applying to beta test the AR-1, you have taken the first step toward revolutionizing an industry."

It's not an actual confirmation that I'll be in the program, but at least it's not a reject letter. :)

More then I got.

Congratulations to a reply! :woo

Got the same email, not gonna get my hopes up but would be cool to beta test that bad boy

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

So if one gets accepted into the beta, does the beta tester need to pay for the helmet?

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

I got a confirmation email as well. One thing that stuck out to me... "Riders can increase their visibility in the selection process by sharing Skully on Facebook and Twitter." Thought that was a bit sketchy. And, if selected, I'm certainly not paying for the helmet.

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

I got my email also. I'm out. Skully wants prospective beta testers to pimp the helmet on FaceBook and Twitter and in doing so will increase the prospect's "visibility".

First I don't do FB or Tw. And pimp a product you haven't tested and is for all intents and purposes untested is just wrong as far as I'm concerned. And to make that a condition of the selection process is even wronger. LOL.

My WAG is that you will be "entitled" to a discount for the helmet you're about to test. If the MSRP is going to be $3000 it wouldn't seem likely that they'd just give it to you to be returned on completion of testing. Maybe they'll take a CC "just in case".

If anybody here gets one to test by all means please give us the 411. It's probably way out of my wallet's comfort zone but I'd really like to hear all the cool details.

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

I got my email also. I'm still in but my pimping days are over. Before I pimped I wanted to make sure that the product worked to my satisfaction :D, for me that hasn't changed! Oh, and I didn't buy it first;)

LOL! I say I'm out as the selection may be heavily based on how much "social networking" aka pimping a prospect does and I won't be doing any either. So if they do offer me a helmet to evaluate I'll take it.

So it seems we're on the same page. I hope their product succeeds and more importantly spurs even more competition.

No, it's a marketing ploy. The next paragraph that you didn't include suggests "Riders can increase their visibility in the selection process by sharing Skully on Facebook and Twitter". So they want you to promote the product to increase your chance of (before) getting actual hands on experience with it. Nice... no thanks. I'll test one, and then I'll let folks know what I think, regardless of the outcome.

Re: Skully Helmet with HUD, now taking applications to Beta Test

$3000, regardless of the safety potential of the technology, is steep for a product that has a 5 year cycle.

That $3000 price hasn't been confirmed yet (just a guess so far), and we won't really know until Skully puts the helmet up for sale.
