Numb hand?

Take notice of where your hand is numb. Carpal tunnel syndrome makes your thumb and fingers over to and including the inside half of your ring finger numb the best I remember.
You do remember. I developed a slight numbness in both hands, at different times, and it affects the pinky and outer half of each ring finger. I don't notice it anymore unless I pay attention to it. I do have full function of all fingers.

I adapted a NEP throttle lock on my 07.

That is the one that came with my 2000 ST1100. Really easy to use, it flips at the tip of the thumb.

Also, last time I went for a ride, I suspected a new pair of gloves I was trying, might be just a bit more tight, and could be responsible for a little restrain in blood circulation.

This is exactly what I had . Used it on four different bikes over three decades . super simple but worked great .

I also use the NEP on my NH750, but it's too thick to fit between my throttle grip and the housing.

I made room for my modified VistaCruise Throttle Lock by moving the BMW Sport Grip slightly to the right and then placing a washer/spacer under the bar-end weight. Untouched for the last 187K. FWIW YMMV

Thanks . I ordered a perforated pair for the summer heat . I have a couple other similar type pair ( heavier & more heat ) from a source ( Qwi-Nerve Protector Gloves ) that has gone out of business about a year ago.
Well got the Shock-tek gloves , 3 X - Not even close , no cigar ! Took 2 minutes to get them on , 10 minutes to get them off again , they are so tight , can barely use my hands . need 5 X !

Went for a two hour ride last saturday : I did something I never do, and maybe silly.
I went bare hand, no gloves at all.

Guess what : no more numb hands !

I do believe glove are an important piece of protective equipment. But, it make me realise that eventhough I feel they are a good fit for my hands, I should try another pair of a larger size.

Thanks for all of the great feedback, riders! I have Grip Puppies coming on Wednesday, and once I get those on I will try the Cramp Buster once again, with some inner tube under it. I believe I will also have to look at the angle of my levers, to see if I need to roll those forward on the bars a bit more.

I have long thumbs. I have to try several pairs on to find one that went jamb the end of my thumb and cause pain/numbness. Look at your hands and determine what kind of monkey you are. Then try to find gloves for that kind of monkey.

I had the carpal tunnel surgery done on my right hand about 5 years ago after suffering a numb/cold hand whenever I tried to ride. I thought it was just bad circulation and tried larger gloves and heated grips but it was not really improved. The CTS was done under a general (because I am a wimp and my medical insurance would pay fully) and the advice from the surgeon was to do whatever I liked after the op, no recovery time necessary. I did manage to stretch the stitches open because my version of "whatever I liked" included disassembly of the corroded forks on a just purchased VTR1000F, possibly not what the surgeon had in mind! Aside from not being able to push across hard between my thumb and pinkie, I've lost no strength or flexibility, and the oucome was a great success; my hand is not a limiting factor in any two-wheeled shenanigans.

tt48,
I didn't read all the responses, but since you mentioned elbow pain also, might be this...

I had Right handed De Quervains syndrome in 2016. Long distance riding became pretty uncomfortable sometimes. I had 3 injections and decided to have corrective surgery. Glad I did, hasn't caused me any problems since.

Good Luck, Ride Safe

Thanks, Bikeric. I had a Crampbuster, but over time it got loose as if it had stretched somehow, and just started rotating around the grip over the course of a few minutes and would not stay in the same place. I wonder if Grip Puppies would help? I have been wanting to try those anyway.

Perhaps installing the Crampbuster over the Grip Puppies would help keep the Crampbuster in place....
I have the cramp buster over the grip puppies and it works great

Shipment delayed, so no Grip Puppies until tomorrow night now.

But, I put the Cramp Buster back on, and moved it inward a bit, more toward the middle of the grip rather than the outboard edge, and it seemed to be a bit better during the commute yesterday.

C'mon, Grip Puppies!

Now to find something to keep my head from being numb er dumb sorry.

I adapted a NEP throttle lock on my 07. worked great .You could lock and take your hand off and stretch out and cruise for a while!

I've tried my new NEP on my 11, but it's too tight between the housing and the grip. What did each of you do to make it fit?

I may have mentioned earlier in the thread, but to make a little room for my modified Vista Cruise I put a washer on the bar end bolt and wiggled* my BMW Sport grip out a smidge* to make room, 187k ago.

The last few times I have ridden my '97, I have experienced some numbness in my throttle hand, accompanied by some minor pain in my elbow, after about 20 minutes of riding. I can get some temporary relief at a stop by letting my throttle hand hang straight down, but once it starts it comes back quickly.

Has anybody experienced this? Any advice on how to eliminate it?

I don't think it's from vibration...she runs pretty smooth, and it's just the right hand.
I have been riding for 37 years with 20 as an LE professional. I started getting the same feeling you are experiencing when I hit 45 years old. My doctor said it was due to years of twisting the throttle and the tunnels collapsing in my wrist where the nerves lay. It won't happen to everyone but for those of us who played contact sports, rode our bicycles to the extreme from 7 years of age, and have ridden dirt and street bikes our whole lives, our bodies are starting to talk back to us. Getting old stinks but I won't say it sucks until I can't ride anymore. Sometimes you can get surgery to correct it but there are always risks with surgery. I just shake my hand out from time to time and use a cramp buster when I can.

John, thank you! Your washer/spacer trick worked perfectly! With the NEP adjusted just right (snug enough to grip well but still over-ride when on), it rides in the new gap and doesn't wiggle around too much when off.

I put four standard washers over the bolt, adding maybe 3/16" of length, and made sure to hold the weight in the position it would normally be in, which angled the washers, and should keep the weight from turning.

It took me a few minutes to work the grip down the throttle tube far enough to cover the washers, and to get it even enough to make the hair-thin gap between the grip end and the weight even all the way around.

Excellent tip! :thumb:

I have not read this entire thread but can relate to the tingling / numbnesss. I use a throttle rocker to reduce the grip requirement and roll my shoulders forward and backward three times any time I feel the tingling coming on.

Google "thoracic process" to see the most common anatomical culprit here. Rolling your shoulders moves the nerve, artery and vein around in the opening under your collarbone and above your first rib.

I'm not a medical professional, but have a brother who is a physical therapist with 30+ years experience and is a lifelong motorcyclist. His advice works for me and is worth trying, in my opinion.
